10 EASY STEPS TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ONLINE CHAT
Instructions for participating in Tea Leaf Chat. You may want to print out these instructions and have them handy the first couple of times you try to participate.
1. The chat room will be open all the time and is accessible from the Members-Only Page of the Club's website. You are welcome to stop by any time but it's unlikely that you'll meet other Tea Leaf Club members there other than at announced times. Watch for Chat Announcements in TLOL and on the Members-Only Page of the Club's website.
2. From the Members-Only Page of the Club's website, wait for the button to appear. This may take a moment depending on your computer. Should the CHAT NOW button never appear, you may be unable to participate in the chat sessions. If you are not running a Java-enabled web browser chat won't function for you.
3. When the button does appear and you are ready to try to chat online, click on it. (Ignore the Bravenet button - it's an ad for the chat service provider.) You will be taken to a chat introduction screen.
4. On the chat introduction screen, you will be asked to enter Your Name and Your Profile. Sign in to chat using a name which will be recognizable to other Club members who may be chatting at the same time. Everyone knows that Julie goes by Juliehoo, Dale goes by MrTeaLeaf and Chris will probably log on as MsEditor.
For example, if Julie logs in, she might enter:
Your Name: Juliehoo
Your Profile: Julie Rich from Newark Delaware, Tea Leaf Readings Editor Emeritus
You'll also see a light blue CHAT button which you will click after you've entered your name and profile.
Our chat room is called "Tea Leaf Club Members". There is a slight possibility that non-Club members may wander in to the chat room but chances are slim, and we can click on their names and select IGNORE from the PEOPLE column to make them "disappear".
5. If you've never participated in an online chat before it may be confusing at first - lots of people typing, asking questions, answering questions, making observations, etc. You definitely have to get used to it.
6. A chat window will pop up on your screen. By default, the room name will automatically be Tea Leaf Club Members.
7. You are now in the chat room for Tea Leaf Club Members. There are three sections to this screen.

- Along the right hand side is a column with the names of the people who are also "in the room".
- In the big box along the left side you will see the messages which folks are sending to one another and to the rest of the group - the Chat Area. It may be difficult at first to get used to reading the sender's name and their message but with practice it becomes easier.
- The long white bar towards the bottom of the window is the area where you will type your own messages. Place your cursor in this box, type your message, and hit the ENTER key on your keyboard to send the message.
8. Spend as much time online as you like. Most chat sessions will generally not last for more than 45 minutes and we'll try to announce a chat topic to keep us focused.
9. When you're done chatting, click on the ROOM button at the top left of the window and select "CLOSE". From the next window, select RETURN TO WEBSITE to get back to the place from which you started.
Sound confusing? It's really not!
10. Give it a try and HAVE FUN.
P.S. Since the chat room is open and available all the time, if you are a Club Committee Chair please feel free to use the room whenever you like to schedule get-togethers for your committee members. Or, if you just want to chat with another Club member and save on long distance phone charges, arrange a time to get together and enjoy!
